Documents Needed to Start Your Student Visa Application For Australia

Getting into an Australian university is the part most students spend all their energy on. The visa comes after, and a lot of people treat it as a formality – you’ve been admitted, surely the visa is just paperwork.

It’s not quite that simple. The Australian student visa application (Subclass 500) is thorough, and missing or incorrect documents are the most common reason for delays.

Some of the documents take time to obtain – a health check appointment, a police clearance certificate, an OSHC insurance policy.

If you try to pull these together in the week before your deadline, you will almost certainly run into a problem.

Here’s the full list of what you need, with the practical details that most checklists leave out.

1. Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid at the time of your visa application, and it must remain valid throughout your stay in Australia. The standard guidance is at least six months of validity remaining from the time of your application.

If your passport is about to expire or will expire during your course, renew it before you apply for the visa. If you’ve already submitted your visa application and then receive a new passport, you’ll need to update your details in your ImmiAccount with the new passport number and inform the embassy.

2. Academic Transcripts and Certificates

You need certified true copies of your academic documents – Class 10, Class 12, your bachelor’s degree and transcripts if you’re applying for a postgraduate program. These need to be clear, complete, and in English (or certified English translations if they’re in another language).

Certified copies means notarized or attested copies, not just photocopies. Check whether the institution you’re applying to and the Australian embassy require institutional attestation, notarization, or both.

3. Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

This is the document that proves your admission is confirmed and registered with the Australian education system. Your CRICOS-registered Australian institution issues it after you’ve accepted your offer and completed enrollment formalities.

You cannot apply for a student visa without a CoE. This is the document that triggers the visa eligibility.

One thing students often don’t know: if you’re planning to do a foundation course, an English language program, or a bridging course before your main degree, you need a separate CoE for each of those courses. Not one combined CoE – individual ones for each program.

4. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Australian immigration requires all student visa applicants to have Overseas Student Health Cover for the full duration of their visa. This isn’t optional and it isn’t something you can sort out later – you need to show the OSHC receipt at the time of your visa application.

The average cost of OSHC for a single student is approximately AUD 437 for 12 months. Your course duration determines the coverage period you’ll need. Make sure the OSHC policy covers the full length of your study program, because your visa tenure is linked to your coverage period.

5. Health Checkup Certificate

You need to demonstrate you’re in good health. This is done through a health examination by a doctor listed on Australia’s panel of approved physicians. You can find your nearest empanelled doctor through the Home Affairs website.

When you complete the health examination, you’ll receive a HAP (Health Assessment Panel) ID, which you enter into your visa application form.

One practical note: you can submit your visa application before completing the health check, and then complete the examination afterward. However, your visa won’t be processed until the health check is done and the results are submitted. Completing it beforehand keeps your application moving without gaps.

6. Passport-Size Photographs

Four passport-sized photographs are required. These should show head and shoulders only, against a plain white or light background. Your name should be printed on the back of each photograph. Use recent photographs that look like you now, not an old photo from a previous passport application.

7. English Language Proficiency Scores

The Australian Department of Home Affairs accepts five English proficiency tests for student visa applications:

IELTS – minimum score of 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.5 in any individual section.

TOEFL iBT – minimum scores of 12 in Listening, 13 in Reading, 21 in Writing, and 18 in Speaking.

PTE Academic – minimum score of 50 in each of its sections.

OET (Occupational English Test) – minimum grade of B in each section. This one is specifically designed for healthcare professionals and is more relevant for medical and nursing applicants.

Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) – minimum score of 169 in each of the four sub-sections.

Important on validity: IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and OET scores must have been taken no earlier than three years before your visa application date. For CAE, the test must have been taken after January 1, 2020.

Your university’s admission offer may require different or higher scores than the visa minimum. Check both requirements – the visa minimum and your course’s admission requirement – before registering for your test.

8. Proof of Financial Capacity

Australia requires you to demonstrate you can cover your costs for the duration of your study. The minimum funds requirement is AUD 24,505 per year, which is meant to cover living costs, travel, and tuition.

Acceptable evidence includes bank statements showing consistent funds over at least three to six months, a letter from an education loan provider if you have a sanctioned loan, scholarship letters if applicable, or documented financial support from a sponsor with their own financial documentation.

The key point about bank statements: the funds need to show a consistent balance over time, not a recent large deposit. A statement showing AUD 24,505 appearing in the account two weeks before your application is less convincing than months of consistent financial standing.

If you’re covering expenses through an education loan, include the full loan sanction letter specifying the approved amount and the repayment terms.

9. Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)

Australia requires a character assessment as part of the visa process, and a Police Clearance Certificate is the standard way to satisfy this. The PCC confirms you have no serious criminal record.

For Indian students, the PCC is issued by the regional passport office. The process takes time – typically several weeks. Don’t leave this for the last few days before your application submission. Start the PCC process as early as possible once you have your university offer.

10. Debit or Credit Card for Visa Fee Payment

The visa fee is paid online through ImmiAccount at the time of application. The current visa fee for the Student Visa (Subclass 500) is AUD 1,600. The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) fee is AUD 1,945. These fees are subject to change – always verify the current figure on the official Department of Home Affairs website before you pay.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Apply

The process is entirely online. Indian students apply for the Australian student visa through ImmiAccount, the Australian government’s online application system. There’s no paper application and no requirement to visit a consulate for most applicants.

Get documents in order before you start the online form. The online application asks you to upload documents as you go. Going into it with everything ready means you’re not scrambling mid-application to find a document you didn’t know you needed.

Foundation and bridging course applicants need multiple CoEs. If your admission pathway involves a preparatory course before your degree, each course needs its own CoE. This is a common point of confusion.

OSHC must cover the full visa period. Buying a 12-month policy when your course runs for 18 months creates a gap in coverage that immigration will flag. Match your OSHC coverage to your course duration.

Timing of the health check matters. If you schedule it after submitting your application, factor in the time it takes to get an appointment with an empanelled doctor. In busy cities, there can be a wait of one to two weeks for appointments.
