All About the Chevening Scholarships 2027 For Indian Students

The Chevening Scholarship application window for the 2027-28 cohort opened on August 4, 2026. The deadline is October 6, 2026, at 11:00 UTC – which works out to 4:30 PM IST the same day.

If you’ve been thinking about applying, you have until early October. That’s not a lot of time for an application of this complexity, and the people who do best are almost always the ones who started thinking about this months ago – not the ones who begin two weeks before the deadline.

What the Chevening Scholarship Actually Is

The Chevening Scholarship is a fully funded, one-year master’s scholarship offered by the UK government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Over 1,500 scholarships are awarded each year across more than 160 countries.

India gets 100 to 110 of those – out of thousands of applications from Indian candidates. The acceptance rate for Indian applicants is roughly 8 to 10%.

“Fully funded” is worth taking seriously here. The scholarship covers:

University tuition fees. Return economy flights. A monthly living stipend that scales based on whether you’re studying in London or elsewhere in the UK. An arrival allowance when you land. A departure allowance paid with your final stipend. The cost of your UK student visa application. A contribution toward TB testing if required.

It’s not a partial tuition waiver. It’s the whole thing.

One condition that’s fundamental to the scholarship: you must return to your home country for a minimum of two years after completing your studies. Chevening is explicitly investing in future leaders who will take their UK education back to their countries and use it there. If your goal is long-term UK settlement, Chevening is not the right scholarship for that – and being unclear about this in your application will cost you.

The Full Timeline For 2026-2027

The process from application to result takes about eight months. Most of that time you’re just waiting – which is its own kind of difficult. The shortlisting phase between October and February is entirely internal to the reading committees. You won’t receive updates during that period.

Who Is Eligible

The eligibility list is specific, and it’s worth checking all of it before you invest time in the application.

You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country. India is on the list.

You need an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second-class (2:1 honours) or above. For most Indian universities, this translates to roughly 60% or a CGPA of 6.0 or above – though the equivalent varies by institution and Chevening evaluates these on a case-by-case basis.

You need at least two years of work experience. That works out to approximately 2,800 hours. These don’t have to come from a single employer – Chevening allows you to present up to 15 different employment records to make up the required hours. Mandatory internships during your degree do not count toward this.

You must apply to three different eligible UK master’s programs as part of the application. These must be full-time taught master’s courses starting in autumn, lasting between nine and twelve months. Research master’s, MRes, PhD, DPhil, part-time, distance learning, and courses requiring more than one month of study outside the UK are all ineligible.

You must be willing and able to return to India for at least two years after completing your scholarship.

Who cannot apply:

People with British or dual British citizenship (with narrow exceptions for British overseas territory citizens and Hong Kong applicants). Anyone who has previously studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship. Current or former UK government employees who left within the last two years – including those who worked for the FCDO, British embassies, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence, or UKVI. Employees of the British Council, sponsoring UK universities, or the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Relatives of the above categories are also ineligible.

One note for those considering a second master’s: you can apply for Chevening even if you’ve already done one master’s, as long as you can clearly explain how a second master’s in the UK advances your specific goals for impact in India.

How to Apply

Everything goes through the Online Application System at chevening.org/apply. You cannot submit a paper application. The system closes at the deadline with no exceptions.

The application covers personal and educational background, work experience details, your three course choices, and – most critically – four essays.

The essays cover: leadership and influence, networking, your reasons for choosing the UK and the specific course you’ve selected, and your career plans. These four sections are what Chevening is actually judging. Your grades and work experience get you past the eligibility screen. The essays determine whether you move forward.

A few things about the course choices: once submitted, you cannot change them unless Chevening grants you specific permission to do so at the interview stage. Choose carefully. All three courses should tell a coherent story about your goals and direction. Three completely unrelated programs signal unclear thinking.

You apply to the universities separately, through their own portals, independently of the Chevening application. If you’re conditionally selected for the scholarship, you’ll be required to submit an unconditional offer letter from one of your three chosen universities by July 8, 2027.

Two referees will be asked to submit references after you’re longlisted. Their references go directly to Chevening, not through you. Give your referees adequate notice and make sure they know the timeline.

The AI Essays Policy – Read This Before You Write Anything

Starting with the 2027-28 cycle, Chevening has implemented a zero-tolerance policy against the use of AI tools for drafting scholarship essays. Applications that trigger AI-detection protocols or lack a distinctively personal voice will be disqualified without review.

This isn’t a technicality. Chevening reads for voice, specificity, and genuine personal insight. Essays that could have been written by anyone – because they were generated by a tool that makes everything sound like everyone – get caught. The same principle applies even if you use AI as a starting point and edit heavily.

Write from your own experience. If you can’t write it without AI assistance, that’s information about whether your story is clearly enough formed to make a strong application. The solution isn’t to outsource the writing – it’s to do more thinking about what you actually want to say.

The Universities You Can Apply To

Chevening works with most major UK universities. Some of the institutions Indian applicants commonly apply to include:

The full list of eligible institutions is available on the official Chevening website. The breadth of choice is genuinely one of the strengths of the program – it’s not restricted to a narrow group of elite institutions.

One Thing Worth Saying Directly

The 8 to 10% acceptance rate for Indian applicants is real and it means most people who apply won’t get it. That’s not a reason not to apply – the scholarship is fully funded and the credential is genuinely powerful for careers in leadership, policy, and international development. But it is a reason to go in with realistic expectations and a backup plan.

The students who win Chevening are rarely the ones with the highest grades. They’re the ones who have done meaningful things with what they know, who have a specific and credible vision for what they’ll do after, and who can articulate all of that in a way that makes a reading committee stop and pay attention.

If that description doesn’t fit your profile yet, the right response isn’t to apply anyway and hope. It’s to take the next year to build toward it, and apply in the following cycle.
