UK Post Study Work Visa For Indian Students : The Complete Guide

Before anything else, there’s one date every Indian student studying in the UK right now needs to know.

December 31, 2026.

If you apply for the UK Graduate Visa (also called the Post Study Work Visa) on or before that date, you get two years of post-study work rights. Apply on January 1, 2027 or later, and you get 18 months.

For students starting a one-year master’s in September 2026, this is particularly relevant. You’ll graduate in mid-2027 and apply in 2027 – which means you’ll be subject to the new 18-month rule. If you’re starting in 2025 and graduating in 2026, you likely still get two years. The timing of your application, not your enrollment, is what determines which rule applies.

That’s the critical context. Now let’s go through everything else.

What the Graduate Visa Actually Is

The UK Graduate Visa is an unsponsored post-study work route. It lets you stay in the UK after completing your degree to work, look for work, or start your own business – without needing an employer’s sponsorship and without a minimum salary requirement.

Key features: you can work in any job at any skill level. You can be self-employed. You can freelance. You don’t need to provide proof of funds when applying. You don’t need to demonstrate English proficiency (your UK degree already serves as proof). There’s no annual quota on the visa – every eligible graduate who applies gets it.

Duration: two years for bachelor’s and master’s graduates who apply on or before December 31, 2026. Eighteen months for the same categories applying from January 1, 2027. Three years for PhD and doctoral graduates (this doesn’t change under the new rule).

The visa starts from the day your application is approved, not the day you submit it.

Eligibility – What You Must Have

To qualify for the UK Graduate Visa, you need to meet all of the following:

You must have completed a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a UK university during the period covered by your UK Student Visa.

You must be in the UK when you apply. Leaving the UK (including to Ireland, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands) after submitting your application but before a decision is made will result in your application being automatically withdrawn. Stay in the UK from the moment you submit until you receive the decision.

Your UK Student Visa must still be valid at the time of your application. You don’t need to wait for your graduation ceremony or your degree certificate – you can apply as soon as your university notifies the Home Office that you’ve completed your course.

The minimum UK study period requirement: if your course lasted more than 12 months, you must have studied in the UK for at least 12 months. If your course was shorter than 12 months, you must have been in the UK for the full duration of the course.

Your university must have confirmed your course completion to the UK Home Office. If you’re unsure whether they’ve done this, ask your university’s international student office.

The Cost Breakdown

The Graduate Visa has two fee components, and the combined total is higher than most students expect.

The application fee is £937 for both the 18-month and the 2-year/3-year versions.

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is £1,035 per year. Depending on how long your visa runs:

If you’re getting the 18-month visa, the IHS is £1,152.50. If you’re getting the 2-year visa, the IHS is £2,070. If you’re getting the 3-year PhD visa, the IHS is £3,105.

Total out-of-pocket cost including both components: approximately £3,007 for the 2-year visa, or £2,089 for the 18-month version.

One useful note: if you end up getting a job in the UK public sector healthcare (NHS roles, for example), you may be entitled to a refund of the IHS. This applies to some graduate visa holders who take up qualifying employment.

How to Apply: Step by Step

The entire application is online. There’s no paper form and no requirement to visit a consulate.

  • Step 1 : Prove your identity. You’ll do this through the UK Immigration: ID Check app by signing into your UKVI account (or creating one). If the app isn’t available for your situation, you’ll need to visit a UKVCAS service point to provide your photograph and fingerprints in person.
  • Step 2 : Upload your documents. The core documents required are a valid passport or travel document, your CAS reference number from your original student visa application, and either your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or your eVisa digital proof of immigration status. Additional documents depending on your circumstances: if your partner or children are applying as dependants with you, you’ll need proof of your relationship. If your studies were funded by a scholarship or sponsor in the last 12 months, you’ll need a letter from the scholarship provider.
  • Step 3 : Pay and submit. Pay the application fee and IHS online, then submit. If any documents aren’t in English or Welsh, provide certified translations.
  • Step 4 : Wait. Processing typically takes eight weeks. You must stay in the UK during this time. If it’s going to take longer, the Home Office will contact you by email.

What You Can and Cannot Do on This Visa

What you can do :

Work in any job at any skill level. There’s no minimum salary and no occupation restrictions (with the exceptions below). Look for work. Be self-employed, freelance, or work as a contractor. Start a business. Study (as long as the course doesn’t qualify for a Student Visa). Do voluntary work for registered charities, voluntary organisations, fundraising bodies, or statutory bodies. Travel internationally and return to the UK. Have your partner and children with you if they were on your Student Visa as dependants.

What you cannot do :

Claim public funds or benefits, including the State Pension. Work as a professional sportsperson. Access support that counts as public funds.

Bringing Your Family

If your partner and children were with you in the UK as dependants on your Student Visa, they can apply to remain as dependants on your Graduate Visa. Children born during your student visa period can also apply. Their visa ends on the same day as yours.

Each dependent must submit a separate application and pay a separate fee. They’ll need your unique application reference number (found in your confirmation email) to link their application to yours. If they’re also transitioning from a Student Visa, they’ll need their own eVisa records or BRP.

The Key Dates That Determine Which Rule Applies to You

Graduation MonthApplication DateDuration You’ll Receive
Mid-2026 or earlierOn or before Dec 31, 20262 years (bachelor’s / master’s)
Late 2026On or before Dec 31, 20262 years
Mid-2027 (Sept 2026 intake, 1-year master’s)After Jan 1, 202718 months

The determining factor is when you apply, not when you start or finish your course.

What Happens When the Graduate Visa Expires

The Graduate Visa cannot be extended. When it expires, you need to either leave the UK or have transitioned to another visa.

The most common transition is to a Skilled Worker Visa. To qualify, you need a confirmed job offer from a licensed UK sponsor before you apply.

The salary requirement is £41,700 per year or the going rate for your specific occupation, whichever is higher.

As a new entrant to the UK labour market, you may qualify for a discounted threshold of £33,400 (or 70% of the going rate, whichever is higher). Check the New Entrant criteria carefully based on your age and recent graduation status.

Time spent on the Graduate Visa does not count toward the five years of continuous residence required for Indefinite Leave to Remain (permanent residency). The ILR clock starts from when you switch to the Skilled Worker Visa.

The Processing Timeline

Applications are typically processed within eight weeks of submission. The Home Office will contact you if it’s going to take longer.

Reasons for delay include document verification requirements, an interview request, or personal circumstances (such as a prior criminal record).

During the processing period, you’re allowed to remain in the UK and continue working in your current role if you have one.

Don’t make travel plans that require leaving the UK until your Graduate Visa decision has been confirmed.
