Every year, students ask me the same question in different ways :
“Sir, TOEFL ka fee kitna hota hai… and that’s all, right?”
Not really.
The registration fee is only one part of the story. The real confusion starts when dates change, deadlines are missed, or universities ask for scores again.
This article explains TOEFL exam fees for Indian students in 2026 the way it should be explained – clearly, honestly, and without jargon.

ToggleTOEFL Exam Fee in India 2026
Let’s start with the one number everyone wants to know.
In 2026, the TOEFL exam fee in India is ₹18,000.
This fee is the same whether you :
- take the TOEFL at a test centre, or
- take the TOEFL iBT Home Edition from your house
There is no discount for home testing. ETS charges the same amount.
When you pay ₹18,000, you are paying for :
- One TOEFL iBT attempt
- Your official score report
Free score sending to four universities
That’s it. Anything beyond this costs extra.
| Purpose | Amount (INR) |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT Registration Fee | ₹18,000 |
| Late Registration Fee | ₹3,900 (extra) |
| Rescheduling Fee | ₹5,900 |
| Additional Score Report (per university) | ~₹1,950 |
| Speaking or Writing Recheck | ~₹7,900 |
Keep this table in mind. Most surprises come from these extra charges.
Why Some Websites Show a Lower TOEFL Fee
You might see numbers like ₹15,000 or ₹15,254 online and think : “Why am I being charged ₹18,000 then?”
That’s because ETS lists base fees without GST.
In India, 18% GST is added, and once tax is included, the final payable amount becomes ₹18,000.
So no – you’re not being overcharged.
TOEFL at Home Exam Fee
No.
The TOEFL at Home exam fee in India is also ₹18,000.
Many students assume home testing will cost less, but ETS treats it exactly like a centre-based test. Universities also accept it the same way (unless a specific university says otherwise).
The only real difference is :
- stricter room rules
- stable internet required
online proctor watching you throughout
Money-wise, there is no difference.
TOEFL Essentials Test Fee
ETS also offers a shorter test called TOEFL Essentials.
- Fee : around ₹10,000 (depends on dollar rate)
- Shorter duration
Faster results
But here’s the important part most students miss:
*** Not all universities accept TOEFL Essentials.
Before choosing it only because it’s cheaper, always check:
- your university’s language requirement
whether Essentials is explicitly mentioned
If not, stick to TOEFL iBT.
TOEFL Fees by City in India
Whether you take TOEFL in :
- Delhi
- Mumbai
- Hyderabad
- Bangalore
- Chennai
- Pune
- Kolkata
…the fee is still ₹18,000.
City only affects :
- seat availability
test dates
Never the price.
TOEFL Late Registration Fee (This Is Where Students Lose Money)
This happens more often than you’d think.
- Normal registration closes 7 days before the test
- Late registration stays open till 4 days before the test
Late fee charged: ₹3,900 extra
So if you register late, you don’t pay ₹18,000 — you pay ₹18,000 + ₹3,900.
There is no benefit to late booking. Only loss.
TOEFL Rescheduling Fee (Changing Dates Is Costly)
If you want to change your test date —
- you must do it at least 4 days before the exam
rescheduling fee : ₹5,900
If you miss this window —
- your entire TOEFL fee is gone
- no refund
no date change
This is why I always tell students : book only when you’re genuinely ready.
TOEFL Cancellation & Refund Policy (Half Back, Not Full)
TOEFL refunds are strict.
- Cancel 4 days before the test → you get 50% refund
- Cancel later → no refund
Refund comes back in USD, to the same card/account
ETS keeps the other half to cover admin and test centre costs.
TOEFL Score Sending Fee (After the First 4 Universities)
Your TOEFL fee includes free score sending to 4 universities.
If later you decide to apply to more colleges:
- you pay USD 20 per university
roughly ₹1,600–₹1,950 each, depending on exchange rate
This adds up quickly, so shortlist universities carefully.
TOEFL vs IELTS Exam Fee in India
Today, cost is no longer a deciding factor.
- TOEFL iBT : ₹18,000
IELTS Academic : ₹18,000
Choose based on :
- exam format comfort
- university preference
your strengths (listening vs reading vs writing)
Not price.
Final, Honest Advice

If you rush, it becomes costly.
